Mini Working Bat-Signal

BATMAN Prop Build

The Mini Working Bat-Signal was inspired by the iconic spotlight used to summon Batman. This compact version was designed as both a display piece and a fully functional prop, complete with a working light projection.

The build began by 3D printing all of the components in PLA before test fitting the assembly and planning the internal electronics. A magnetic battery compartment was incorporated to create a clean, removable cover while keeping the design easy to maintain.

To achieve a smooth finish, the printed parts were sanded, coated with UV resin and finished with high-build filler primer before receiving a metallic silver base coat. A toothpaste masking technique was then used prior to spraying the final matte black finish, allowing realistic paint wear to be revealed once the masking was removed.

The electronics consisted of a high-intensity LED, resistor and switch. After testing several lighting configurations, a single LED produced the sharpest and cleanest Bat-Signal projection.

The final finish was completed using a new weathering process featuring fine steel wool distressing followed by a layered brown, black and yellow wash. This produced subtle worn edges and realistic grime, giving the Bat-Signal the appearance of a well-used piece of rooftop equipment.

This project became one of the first builds to establish my current weathering workflow and remains one of my favourite functional props.
