Painting Complete – On to the Fun Part

Every build has that moment where it suddenly starts feeling real, and tonight was one of those moments.

After several evenings spent filling, sanding, priming and painting, the Thermal Detonator has officially reached the end of the painting stage. From here on, it's all about electronics, final assembly and bringing it to life.

The chrome finish turned out even better than I hoped. The polished chrome domes paired with the softer stainless steel centre section create exactly the contrast I was aiming for, and the clear red resin lens came up beautifully after being coated with UV resin, wet sanded and finished with transparent red paint.

This project has also been a great learning experience. I experimented with a revised UV resin workflow, concentrating extra coats on the larger flat surfaces while keeping detailed areas much lighter. Combined with high-build primer and an airbrushed gloss black base, the results have been some of the smoothest I've achieved on a 3D printed prop.

Not everything went perfectly, of course. I discovered a couple of small areas on the underside of the domes that missed the chrome, but they're almost completely hidden and will be easily blended during the final weathering. Every project teaches you something, and those little lessons are just part of the process.

With the painting now behind me, the exciting part begins. The next session will be all about fitting the electronics, installing the control panel and lens, and finally assembling the Thermal Detonator into a finished, working prop.

I'm looking forward to seeing it light up for the first time.
